FZ6 Fazer S2

This is a page dedicated to my 2007 Yamaha FZ6 Fazer S2.

I bought it as my first ‘big’ bike after passing my full motorcycle license test back in early December ‘07. Here’s what it looked like the day I picked it up from the dealer.

FZ6 Fazer S2

You can find all the technical information for the current model here.

Since I can’t resist tinkering, I will be making a few modifications and I’ll try to document all of them for everyone on here. Luckily, I found an excellent used bike that had been bought by an experienced rider and he had already done a few of the more common mods.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:

Scorpion Exhaust – Aftermarket exhausts serve two  main purposes – increase performance over stock and change the look of the bike. My Scorpion ‘cans’ have removable baffles that allow you to change the tone of the exhaust even more to give the bike a lower tone to the exhaust note. The net effect is that it sounds meaner. They’re a bit louder as well, but not enough to be illegal or annoying.

Dual Headlight Modification - This is actually a safety related mod. You see, Fazers come fitted with two headlights, but only one works when using the low-beam. There are conflicting theories as to why they didn’t enable the other bulb since it has a low-beam filament in it as stock. The mod to resolve this is pretty easy – all you have to do is add a single wire and the light will work. Unfortunately, Yamaha doesn’t sell the wire so you either need to make it yourself or buy one from someone.

There is a very well written how-to on the FZ6-forum website by ‘biker_dude43′ who also sells custom made cables that will plug right into the wiring harness.

Puig ‘Racing’ Screen – The Puig screen also serves a dual purpose – it helps alleviate wind blast on the motorway and it looks damn fine. Seriously though, although the stock screen is pretty good, I do a fair amount of motorway miles and it’s nice to have improved wind protection. I think the darker tint looks much better – especially on the ’stealth Black’ bike. Here are a couple of pics I took on my way home from work.

Yes, that’s Buckingham Palace in the background. Suffice it to say that it’s a nice ride home.

Here’s a close-up. Notice the Red screen bolts.

Red Screen Bolts – purely decorative, but look sweet.

Datatool Alarm – the Datatool alarm works in conjunction with the factory fitted immobiliser to make up a complete security system.

DATATAGDATATAG is a UK-centric security tool that deters theft by digitally ‘tagging’ loads of parts on the bike. Check out their site for a much better explanation. It helps reduce my insurance payment and the risk of theft so I’m glad I have it.

Crash bobbins (or ’sliders’ or ‘bungs’ or ‘frame guards’) – these protect the frame and bodywork in case the bike is dropped. Hopefully I’ll never need them but I’ve got them “just in case”.

Red reflective rim tape – doesn’t really do anything but look cool and maybe improves visibility at night.

Xenon headlamps – the Xenon after-market H4 & H7 bulbs are direct replacements for the standard bulbs, but offer 100% more visible light for the same amount of power. I wasn’t convinced immediately after installing them, but now I realize how much brighter they really are. I’d highly recommend this mod to anyone. (I’m going to do it on my car as well.)

Sticker Removal - the sticker removal process involved getting the tire information off the swingarm and and a couple of Yamaha warning stickers on the top of the gas tank. The tank stickers are very difficult to get off without damaging the paint but by taking my time and working carefully, I managed to get them off without scratching the tank.

Swingarm Stickers – One of the guys on the Fazer forum makes very high-quality stickers and did some sweet Yamaha ones for me. The bike looks much better with them I think.

And here’s what I’m planning in roughly the order I’d like to do it…

High-performance Air Filter – I’ll replace the OEM filter with a K&N filter when it’s due.

High-performance Oil Filter – again, the OEM filter will be replaced with a K&N one.

Synthetic OilAmsoil 10W-40 will be the oil of choice.

Pazzo Short Levers – both form and function. The Pazzo levers have a smoother action and are supposed to work better. They also have a 6-way adjuster so you can get the reach just right. Not to mention they come in loads of colour combinations so you can get the look right too. I’ll be going for Black levers with Red adjusters.

Galfer Front & Rear Brake Line Kit - the Galfer brake line kits will improve overall braking performance by eliminating ‘fade’ that can happen with non-braided lines. They are also coated in plastic to keep from scratching the paint and I can get them in Red. The other advantage is that it is a 2-line system for the front brakes instead of a single line from the MC and an ‘over line’ from one caliper to the other.

Right, I think that’s about it. As I do stuff I’ll update the page with more information and pictures.
